MetLife – August is National Eye Exam Month

Posted by

Founded in 1989 by Sears Optical, National Eye Exam Month was established as a way to educate the public about eye health and safety.

Comprehensive eye exams are one of the most important aspects of preventative health care, namely because many eye diseases and disorders can be detected in the early stages. Even if your vision is perfect and you are without problems, a comprehensive eye exam may say otherwise. An eye exam does more than just test your vision. It can provide insight regarding your overall health and wellness.

Why National Eye Exam Month is Important

Remind your employer groups to celebrate National Eye Exam month by scheduling their eye exams and getting their eyes checked regularly as part of their annual healthcare routine.

How Brokers Can Leverage National Eye Exam Month

Use National Eye Exam Month as an opportunity to discuss the advantages of vision coverage and help your groups save money with MetLife’s flexible and comprehensive benefit options.

With the addition of Davis Vision and Superior to the MetLife portfolio earlier this year, large group members now have access to one of the largest provider networks in the country. Plus, exceptional service and claims experience make it easy for employers and employees to manage and use vision care benefits. Get the details.

Davis Vision by MetLife Offers:

Great value and an extensive retail network that delivers lower out-of-pocket costs for members.

To learn more, download the Davis Vision by MetLife flyer.

Superior Vision by MetLife Offers:

An extensive network of providers and retailers along with access to some of the latest corrective eyewear and procedures, and valuable savings.

To learn more, download the Superior Vision by MetLife flyer.

Independent Brokers Face a New Federal Mandate “That is Unnecessary and Burdensome”

Posted by

Effective October 1, 2022, the federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), is introducing a new broker mandate. If you or anyone on your staff communicate with Medicare-eligible individuals, read on.

The new rule requires brokers to add a disclaimer to communications related to CMS-regulated Medicare products, including in phone calls.

The required new disclaimer states: “We do not offer every plan available in your area. Any information we provide is limited to those plans we do offer in your area. Please contact Medicare.gov or 1-800-MEDICARE to get information on all of your options.”

In addition, the new rules require that broker phone calls related to CMS-regulated Medicare products be recorded.

This helpful recent Newsweek article provides more detail. The text of the full CMS Final Rule can be found here.

California Agents & Health Insurance Professionals (CAHIP) is urging CMS to remove licensed and certified independent agents and brokers from the new requirement.

See CAHIP’s advocacy.

New 988 Mental Health Hotline

Posted by

Launched July 16, 2022, the new National Suicide Prevention Lifeline (known as the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline) is accessed by calling or texting the three-digit code 988. It’s available 24/7 for anyone who is suicidal or experiencing any type of mental health-related distress, including individuals who are worried about a loved one and need crisis support.

The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline – 800.273.8255 – will remain active, but calls will be routed to 988.

When people call or text the 988 lifeline, or chat via the Lifeline’s website, they’ll be connected to the existing network of more than 200 local crisis call centers around the country. Trained counselors will answer the phone, listen to the caller, understand how their problem is affecting them, provide support, and connect them to resources as needed.

Phone services are available in English and Spanish. Translation services are available for more than 250 additional languages.

The goal of the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline is to make it easier for people to call for help, instead of dialing 911 and ending up in an emergency room waiting for hours, or interacting with law enforcement, which can lead to tragedy or trauma.

“Close to 90% of people who call get what they need from the phone call,” says Chuck Ingoglia, CEO of the National Council for Mental Wellbeing.

Blue Shield Travel Reimbursement Program, Pregnancy Termination Services

Posted by

Pregnancy termination services are now restricted or banned in several states as a result of the U.S. Supreme Court overturning Roe v. Wade.

In California, access to pregnancy termination services is protected by state law. However, Blue Shield of California members living in some other states may be negatively impacted by the change.

In response, Blue Shield is introducing a Travel Reimbursement Program for Pregnancy Termination Services. The program assists Blue Shield members living in states that implement restrictions or bans on pregnancy termination services with access to these services in other states where they remain legally available.

The program is available to members in all fully-insured and self-funded groups, except for those groups without pregnancy termination benefits or those groups that elect to opt out of the program. Get the details.
