Effective January 2023, Blue Shield of California is launching two new Virtual Blue plans, available in both the Small Group and Large Group portfolios.
The new Virtual Blue plans give members the choice of virtual or in-person care. Virtual care includes $0 unlimited visits to primary care, behavioral health and specialty care through a new partnership with AccoladeCare. In-person care is available through the Tandem PPO network in California and via BlueCard when outside of the state.

By law, all carriers are required to offer the small group Special Enrollment Period (SEP) one time per year to allow employers to enroll in coverage with a $0 contribution requirement and no minimum participation requirement. The application period is from November 15 to December 15, 2022, for coverage effective January 1, 2023. Carrier administration of the SEP may vary slightly, including recertification at renewal.
Please note: the Special Enrollment Period is different than the relaxed participation promotions. These carrier promotions are usually offered for a specific time period and may be discontinued at any time.

Blue Shield of California has not yet reached an agreement on rates and terms of contracts with Rady Children’s Health Network (RHCN), Rady Children’s Hospitals in San Diego, and Choice Medical Group. Without an agreement, the terminations will become effective as follows:
Blue Shield is preparing a smooth transition to alternate PCPs and medical groups so members will continue to have uninterrupted access to quality care. If a member’s PCP is part of another in-network medical group, they’ll be assigned that same PCP. Otherwise, members will be assigned a new PCP based on geography and availability. PCP reassignment will not occur until the end of the contract period. Members may change their PCP at any time by using the Blue Shield Find a Doctor tool.
